Beat the Heat in Kamloops

Beat The Heat in Kamloops

It’s getting hot in here! While we have had an unusually wet July thus far (great for the wild fires!) the heat is on its way!  With the sunshine on the horizon I thought I’d give ya a few places to go and tips to help you beat that Summer heat!

I was at Home Depot the other day and they had butt loads of portable AC units.  If you don’t have central AC then you should sell- KIDDING!!! 😉  But really, head on over and purchase a unit now because when the heat comes, those suckers get snatched up quickly.

Yummy treats are always a great way to keep the kiddos quiet and keep you cool, and of course I’ve also included a few kid-free/date night style establishments. Here are a few of my favourite local spots here in Kamloops:

Host a bbq in Kamloops BC

STEP 1: THE FOOD

Your first step is to buy quality ingredients. I suggest heading to Costco for some amazing meat selection at great prices.
You may also want to check out Summit Gourmet Meats as they have great options for “ready-to-go” ideas – they make their own hamburger patties, Chicken Kiev, sausages and so much more!

A few meat ideas:

  • Steak: Marinate for 4 days in honey, soy sauce, garlic, and red wine
  • Beef Burgers
  • Spare ribs
  • Kebabs
  • Pork Chops
  • Chicken Breast
  • Salmon: BBQ on lemon slices for taste and it doesn’t stick to the barbeque
  • Lamb

And how about some fresh produce? Lyons Everything Delicious – Open daily with fresh produce such as corn, peppers, sauces and fruit.
To make a hit with food, it starts with quality ingredients.

Upcoming August Temperature Predictions

Middle of August – Around 25-30 degrees with some thunder showers

Why Shop Local?

The Kamloops Farmers' Market

Why shop local? Because where else would you get locally grown and sourced veggies and fruits while enjoying a morning out and about in the gorgeous weather in downtown Kamloops. Yes, three amazing things all thrown into one activity.

Twice a week you can enjoy Kamloops’ very own Farmer’s Market. At the 400 block of Victoria St. (in front of the TNRD Library) on Wednesdays from 8:00-2:00 and at the 200 block of St Paul St. and the Stuart Wood schoolyard on Saturdays from 8:30-12:30, our town comes together with local farmers, bakers, small business and so much more.

Saturday’s are usually bigger than Wednesdays, which means there are more people attending and drifting about, but that doesn’t stop the experience to be had.

What you can find there:

Too hot to leave your dog is the car but don’t want to leave your fur family at home? Then no need to worry as the Market is completely pet friendly. There you can witness dozens of different breeds that come in all shapes and sizes. And hey, maybe your puppy will even make a new best friend and have the time of its life!

Not only can you bring your dog, but you can bring your kids too! There they can eat and play in the nearby park. So, come on down and appreciate what Kamloops has to offer.

Getting To Know Ellie Stevens, Kamloops Realtor

Your questions have been answered! Keep on reading to get to know me – in real estate life, Kamloops life, and my personal life…

Q: When did you first move to Kamloops?

We first moved to Kamloops in 2010 from Terrace BC. Yes, I came from the land of the mountains and rain. Drove through Kamloops in February, there was no snow in sight and it was 7 degrees…we moved two months later.

Q: How did you get into real estate?

It really all happened so fast! I always knew I wanted to run my own business, and I did try a few different things, but nothing really clicked. After working at a company doing admin, I connected with Royal Lepage to discuss the market and potentially flipping a home, they then told me I should consider getting my licence. I thought about it for about 30 seconds before I knew.. I knew instantly that it was something I had to do.

Q: What do you like about the Kamloops lifestyle?

The community, activity and how much everyone LOVES Kamloops. A lot of businesses here are run by locals & supported by the locals and there are so many different areas in town that appeal to different types of lifestyles. Something for everyone.

Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to buy in Kamloops?

Do it.. you WON’T regret it. It crucial we get to understand your lifestyle, goals and priorities because there are so many neighbourhoods throughout Kamloops, it’s important to get to know as much as possible. I love to get to know my buyers before we can even begin; I don’t want to waste their time, or mine by showing them something that wont fit. I’ve been known to find the “unfindable” here.

Q: What do you think you would be if you weren’t a Realtor?

Marketing Strategist – Investor – Consultant

Q: How do you decompress?

Well I’ve recently found Spin – I can just get out of my head and have the best time, while burning calories!! I also love to pick-up my kids everyday from school to have small chats, learn about their day on our drive home. Then a nice glass of prosecco while I cook dinner.. pure bliss. OF COURSE, in-between all of that, I’m hustling to be the best I can be and provide the best for my clients.

Q: What is your favourite thing about working with your clients?

Understanding what makes them happy and exceeding their expectations

Q: What makes you smile the most?

Watching my kids exceed my expectations! They’re sometimes a bit shy and nervous, so when they step out of the shell and go for it, I’m in tears with joy.

Real Estate Agent in Kamloops BC

Q: What is it like raising a family in Kamloops?

It’s happy. Pure and simple; the opportunities for kids allows them to try almost anything! Rock climbing, cheerleading, volunteer with animals, football, soccer, rugby, and painting. Kamloops always knocks it out of the park with family events like movie night in the park, Canada Day, music in the park and so much more.

Q: What accomplishment do you consider to be the most significant in your career or life?

One significant thing is when I learned that I was the reason & responsible for my happiness. When I stopped the excuses and took ownership, my life changed forever… But one of the best things is my marriage, such a huge accomplishment to be married for almost ten years and still deeply love each other. It’s not easy and we’ve made it through a lot together.
My kids are HUGE accomplishments, because that is the scariest thing you can take on in your life, and we’re doing it. I can’t wait to see what they become! I’ve got a lot more to do and accomplish, I haven’t even started.

Real Estate British Columbia

Q: In one sentence, why should people come to live in Kamloops?

Because no where else can you eat, drink and play outside 90% of the time.

Q: What inspires you?

Everyone in my family inspires me in some way, but really my eldest son. He has become so brave and confident, thanks a lot to the football community. He works so hard at everything he does. My youngest son is so happy, fulfilled with the simplest things and content.. he calms us all down and keeps us grounded – could you ask for anything more? Of course my husband, together for ever now, he started his own company and has completely rocked it! Its so impressive how much drive and passion he has for his company. I also love his passion for us, his family. He is an amazing father who takes so much pride in raising his boys, teaching them and SHOWING them respect; in relationships, friends, and family.

8 Easy Steps to Getting Your Pool Ready for Summer!

8 Steps To Get Your Pool Ready For Summer

Summer is coming!! Are you looking forward to having those sunny days relaxing on a floaty, enjoying a cool beverage in your pool? Or those backyard BBQ pool parties with your friends? Then don’t forget these essential steps in getting your pool ready for summer fun.

1) If you have a safety cover, start the pump at least two weeks before you would normally plan to start-up the pool. This prevents green water and algae from growing.

2) Remember to NEVER empty your pool completely

3) You want to take the winter cover off and clean it before storing it away for the summer.

4) You want to make sure your pH levels are balanced so adding the right chemicals is essential; feel free to take a water sample down to the Pool store and they’ll tell you what you need.

5 You also want to get your filter ready. If you need a sand change, get it done PRIOR to the start up, save you money!! If you have a cartilage filter, soak elements in filter cleaner overnight, the rinse it with a hose. If you have hired a pool cleaning company, they will reinstall it at the start up. Pool cleaning companies use NON-toxic anti-freeze, so you don’t have to worry if any gets in your pool.

6) You also want to ensure your pool is filled up before the company arrives

7) Second to last, make sure your pool water is clear before using.

8) Lastly, ENJOY!!

PS. For my ladies reading, one last thing for you all:  Here you go.  You’re welcome 😉

Spring Break Kamloops Style

Ellie Stevens Spring Break Kamloops Style

Spring break is coming upon us and the kids are super excited. I don’t mind it since the boys are older, they mainly go on adventures outside and play battle games all day.
Here’s a cute craft I found and might give it a try, but be prepared, I am NOT good at crafts…I will post the outcome on my Instagram account if we survive the cuteness!

Spring Easter Crafts

But I love spring, it’s a beautiful time in the city and so much to offer for the kids to do.
Here is the Kamloops Summer 2018 activity guide; it is the BEST and has all the info you could need for getting the family all set up.

Earlier this month, I got the pleasure to enjoy the best waffles in the city from The Waffle Laundry – unfortunately they don’t have a permanent spot, but they do pop-ups, which is kinda fun! We got there right as it started, I was soooo pumped to see that it was almost filled up!!!! Such great support for one another in this town.

Kids could not decide, either could I – so we opted for everything.. savoury brie and red pepper jelly & spicy bacon. Sweet – cookies & cream, cinnamon crunch & s’more. I kid you not, so yummy. Best part was that they weren’t crazy sweet or over-the-top with syrups and such. They were simple, fluffy and delicious.

Stayed tuned on my Instagram and I’ll keep ya posted on all these amazing local gem’s in town. I love local, fresh food!  So also make sure you stop on over to Leon John’s Deli & Suppli Co. for some homemade sandwiches, soup and a grilled cheese with a SKIRT (crispy cheese around the sandwich) ….drool… yup, it’s as good as it sounds.
